Are there local volunteer opportunities that you can get involved with? This will check off some of your skills and help you build your network while meeting new people. Sometimes you can find a job in the most unexpected places! Be open to new opportunities and keep in mind that your first job may be a stepping stone - not necessarily where you will end up. Or there may be a way for you to be creative and use these skills you are passionate about - in almost any job! Focus on these skills and spotlight them in your interviews. Ask the interviewer if the job you are applying for will give you an opportunity to flex these skills.

Gloria’s Answer

Hi Arnelle,

I am learning to improve my photography skills with the hope of making money from it in the future. In the mean time, I use my photography skills to help volunteer organizations in my area. Since I have a specific task, I have become very serious about my photography skills. it gives you a sense of purpose and it can give you great exposure to people who may pay you for your skills.

Great question Arnelle,

If you enjoy helping other and love photography - there are many areas you find the two married in a career. You may even find some elective courses you could take to see if you like the general industry. For example, you could look into (and this is just my own list to be taken with a 'grain of salt').

1) Photo Journalism - capturing key events as they happen through your lens.
2) Marketing - helping businesses connect with their customers
3) General Business - being a professional photographer (weddings, special events, etc.)
4) Documentary Making - capturing key events as they happen through your lens.

These are just some suggestions - I hope they help.
