How do I weigh my options?

I've got so much going on right now, I've been wanting a career in biology or just some kind of life science for so long but I've also been in the orchestra since I was 8 years old. My high school has won best orchestra in Texas every year ever since I joined, 3 years in a row. And so now I've thought of considering music major over some kind of life science major, but I really just split. I have enough going on looking for jobs and don't find the time to actually weigh my options. Although now it's Thanksgiving Break and I have the time, but now that I think about it, I don't exactly know how to weigh it or what to think about. #graduated #empoleyed

Interesting question! I am in telecom/software development, but have been in choirs (including one backing up symphonic orchestras) for years. I also have a son-in-law that consider both music... and chemical engineering and settled on chemical engineering. :)

One possible solution (depending on your circumstances) is: both. I have known engineering/sciences majors that are also in college orchestra/choirs/marching band, etc. Hard on your social life, but can be very rewarding.

Having a career in music is possible, but more difficult than one in the sciences. It can be nice to not struggle for money... and "gigs" can be be harder to come by than a biology related job. :) But it is true that "money is not everything"... and if you are okay with having an older car and smaller apartment, but enjoying performing in a group, that may be the right answer. But it is also true a lot of groups can let you have a "day job" and still be a member.

Main thing: Ask yourself what is important to you... and be honest. If you like security and stability, go technical. If you need the spotlights, follow that. But also be honest about tradeoffs and if you can accept them.

Best of luck with your searching!
