Yes! Call some of your local vets and ask whether they hire students. You can also check your local animal shelters, which may need volunteers. Many vet office and shelters hire high school and college students to clean cages, feed animals, and exercise animals. As you gain experience, there may be opportunities to observe veterinary procedures and assist with simple tasks like weight checks and administering medications. Being in a clinic or shelter means you'll be in proximity to vets and vet techs, so you can talk with them about their educations and careers, so this is always something I encourage pre-vet students to look into. Although you may need to begin as a volunteer, showing up regularly, being reliable, and listening well will open doors to greater opportunities down the road.

Most intern positions are unpaid but you can definitely get a paid position working with animals that will help you gain more experience. The best option would be to work as a vet assistant while you’re in school but even working at a shelter or as a kennel assistant, or even a pet bather is going to help you gain experience with animals. Several of my colleagues are in vet school and they just come to work during the summer as a vet assistant and then go back to school during the fall. During the final moments of your schooling you will do internships as well where you’ll gain more experience shadowing and practicing veterinary skills.
