Ryan’s Answer

Hi Malachi. I've loved sports ever since I was young and once hoped to play professionally as well. That didn't end up working out for me and at the time it seemed as if my motivation started to wane also. What worked for me was really trying to seek a new challenge. In sports you are constantly being challenged, by your opponents, by your teammates, by your coach, etc. and when sports are no longer a part of your life, there seems to be a hole left where all those challenges were. I would encourage you to try as many fields and subjects as you can, as early as you can and stick with the one that offers you those constant challenges like basketball did. Cybersecurity, and the technology field as a whole, is a great place to start as it is currently evolving at a great pace, and if you aren't up to the challenge of being able to constantly learn and adapt to the new technologies, you get left behind, just like in sports. This is what provides me the motivation to keep learning and adapting every day, as if I'm fighting to keep my starting job on the team. Hope this helps!

Well, have you decided which college you are attending? Maybe that college of your choice accepts walk-ons or even a simple tryout? It is possible for you to major in Cyber Security and plays a sport as I have done before. Definitely ask the school you are attending to speak with the basketball coach and see if any try-outs are coming up. Also, are you sure cybersecurity is something you want to learn about? Maybe Kinesiology since you have a love for basketball. This can help you in your future to become a coach, physical therapist, trainer, business owner, and so forth!

Cecilia’s Answer

It's okay to not always feel motivated. What I feel drives me is keeping in mind what I want to accomplish and what I want to be. Taking one step at a time I think is also important. Just make sure you are doing something you are truly interested in and that won't feel like work.

Hayden’s Answer

Hi Malachi! This is such a great question. One important thing to remember is that your interests and passions will change throughout your life and therefore, what motivates you will change as well. It's important to continually check in with yourself to see what is motivating and exciting you and asses if you need to make a change in your career to find something that fits with what is engaging for you. Also, while a career and school are incredibly important, don't discount the importance of having hobbies and passions separate from your career! It is important to participate in activities you love (inside and outside of work) to keep yourself engaged and motivated.

Mary’s Answer

Hi Malachi!
I played soccer for 20 years and was recently cut from a professional team because of the pandemic. It can be really challenging to transition from being an athlete to becoming a student or a working professional in a different field. One point of advice I have is to keep playing sports for fun. Find recreational teams, intramural teams in college, or even just pick up games at the park. Sports and fitness continue to help me destress and keep me motivated every day. You have learned a lot of things as an athlete that will help you in college and work. The persistence, passion, and strong work ethic you have developed as a basketball player can be used in cybersecurity or in any other career you might pursue in the future!
