What are some good extracurriculars to commit to?

I know that I need to start on something from now to spice up my university applications but there are a few problems. First of all, my parents are on a very limited budget so I need to be able to do something that isn't too expensive. Second, sports aren't my thing so the obvious answer is out. If anyone here could help me out that would be great. #high-school #extracurriculars #university-applications

Great question! Some items I did are below. Hopefully this spurs some ideas on your end that maybe aren't mentioned below:

- Reading to elementary school students (some schools have programs during lunch hour or after school to come to the younger kids classrooms and read to them)
- Any religious volunteering
- Baby sitting shows responsibility, independence, and leadership
- Dog walking, volunteer at Humane Society, volunteer at vet office, etc.
- Writing letters to Veterans
- Tutoring

Daniela’s Answer

Hi,

An extracurricular activity can be almost anything that isn’t required for high school credit or paid employment. These activities will become very important later, such as when you are applying to colleges, because they help you develop your talents, interests, and passions. They can also teach you practical skills like time management.

With so many options out there, all students should be able to find an extracurricular that they are interested in and can develop a passion for!

Remember that extracurricular activities do not have to be sponsored by your school, so you should also consider things that you do with your family or within your community as viable options.

Below I've listed many popular activities that you may not have thought of as extracurricular activities. Take a look at the list and see if your activities are already on the list, or if anything you hadn't considered before catches your eye.

Good luck!

Hi Nada! This question is from a while ago but I'll post an answer as well in case it might also help another student! I think EC are very helpful for applications whether college or graduate as it can show that you are genuinely interested in being a well-rounded applicant and have other interests besides academics. For extracurriculars, I wouldn't worry about the cost too much-there is a variety of clubs at school that you can take part in and if there's volunteering as well you can also be part of that. Maybe the high school you are attending might have programs to tutor children at a nearby elementary school or plant a garden to help with healthy meal options for the community- just some examples. I think many ECs are about what you like to do and what you care for as well- so money shouldn't be a problem! Check out your school options first and do things you are passionate about and can speak well about if asked- remember quality over quantity!

I wish you the best!
