What is the difference in being a psychologist vs. a therapist?
I recently graduated from Renaissance High School in June of 2021. I will be attending Michigan State University in the fall and I am majoring in psychology. I plan to use my degree to become a therapist and eventually own my own private practice. #psychology #therapy #career

A psychologist is a professional with a doctoral degree and specifically licensed in their state. A therapist is a more umbrella term that refers to specific types of mental health professionals in the field in general. Some psychologists can be considered therapists. Additionally, there are masters degree programs in both counseling and social work that also lead to state level licensure allowing you to open a private practice. Those licensed at the master's level typically make slightly less money per hour when looking at insurance reimbursement rates. If you are looking to work for a company or simply have more options, go for the doctoral degree.
If you know you want to do counseling and want to focus on just that, take a look at counseling programs leading to a Licensed professional counselor credential, or a social work program leading to being a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Both of these licenses have "lower" level licenses that can be utilized to get a job while completing clinical hours (Licensed associate counselor, licensed social worker).
