As a healthcare professional trained in Palliative medicine I have found myself in conflict with most social workers. A lack of well defined role for the specialist has the potential to interfere with smooth functioning of the team as well as patient care. Have found most social workers in India to be lacking in respect for Doctors and not ready to cede their turf. The fact that Doctors/residents do not want to spend quality time evaluating patients is a myth that needs to be stopped from being propagated further. Do not ascribe to a brand name (the name of the Institute where you complete training might be important but that does not alone decide your worth). Have worked in Academic Medical Institutes where such individuals ae being given the chance to pass judgement on the conduct of doctors which is a matter of serious concern. The contentious issue of source of funding, proximity to foreigners and corporate social responsibility also need to be addressed. The idea of a nexus defining the behaviour of a social worker needs to be thwarted.

I definitely agree with what Michael said about having thick skin and an unbiased mind. While I do not have direct experience as a social worker, my sister has been a social worker for many years. From her experience, I would say some important strengths are:
1. Empathy - Your job as a social worker is dealing and assisting with other people's problems, so being able to understand a person's situation is very important.
2. Communication - A large part of a social worker's job is communicating with their clients, gaining an understanding of the help they need and building impactful relationships.
3. Time management - Generally, a social worker will have a large number of clients to assist, and having the ability to schedule and manage time to effectively help everyone is an important skill.
