Hello Jeremy,

This is interesting questions because overtime while you grow in your career it not always the money that will make you excited and want to contribution to the company that hired you, but coming back to the original question Step 1: you have to defined what is "decent paying job" to you. Is in 50K, 75K, or 100 K? Once you know the range you want step 2: research the career that fits that range and see what certifications, experiences, degrees you might need. For example an mechanic that work on diesel engines might make 75k in year with a 2 year certification program, but a person that when to a 4 year college to teach might only start at 50K. Hope this helps!

My recommendation would be to reflect on what your interests are and trying to fit that into the career you're looking for. If you aren't interested or passionate about what you're doing, money will only be a short term motivation that will not sustain you. It also depends on what fields you're looking at as a potential prospect as well. A trade school has lower cost of entry and high potential to earn faster than something in the medical field for example. My best advice to you is to start looking for prospects now and be open to new experiences that you may not have thought about and you might just find a field that you end up loving that also pays what you're looking for.

Andrew’s Answer

I had no idea what I wanted to do when I was younger. Money was a motivator though! I ended up joining the Coast Guard and next thing you know, I retired after 20 years. Pension and healthcare for my family and me for the rest of my life. The military opened my eyes to do much more than money though. Like others have said, you need to find your spark. Good luck!!
