Linda’s Answer

I love photography but it is not a good business to be in. It takes a lot of dedication hard work and practice. I went to college and got a BFA in photography and the only jobs available are working for Lifetouch. They will train you if you have some experience. It is a great part time job which can work into a great full time job if you find the right people. There are many types of photographers which you should research but in the meantime find a job that you like and then work part time as a photographer.

Hi Ella,
Photography can be a good career. So can nursing, truck driving, or teaching be a good job. Any job that you enjoy has the possibility of being a "good" job.
For now, I'll assume you are interested in earning a living as a photographer. My suggestion is too do some research on photography as a career. Your library
will be helpful as well as the internet. Gathering information allows you to make a more informed decision.
I always recommend getting a college degree in a field of your choice. Because earning a living in the arts can be difficult, it's good to have an education that
allows you to make money while you establish yourself as a photographer.
Here's my perspective on making a living as a professional photographer. Some days, the work is interesting and satisfying and other days it's unsatisfying
and boring. Just like any career. The toughest part is marketing myself. I find I am touching a camera about 20% of the time and looking for work 80% of the time.
If you are a staff photographer, those percentages will change. However, there are not a lot of staff positions available. It is hard to make a good living with a camera.

Bob’s Answer

Are you artistically inclined? That is to say do you have an appreciation of how colors work together along with shapes and sizes? Do you consider yourself creative? Do you work well with others and well as being very self directed? Are you technical and methodical? These are a couple of questions, as well as many more to consider when looking at photography as a profession. The only real way to answer that question is to spend time with different photographers and to grab a camera yourself and have the photographers give you feedback on your images. It can be a very rewarding and challenging profession. Depending upon what type of photography you enjoy and the part of the country you live (or wish to travel), a photographer may be a very good fit for you.

Ken’s Answer

Hi Ella!

The best way to find out is to talk to photographers in your area who are doing what you think that you want to do. Also, there might be photography clubs in your area, where you could learn much and meet people who are doing what you think that you want to do. Talk to the reference librarian at your local library to locate such clubs. Photography may be a good career area, but every person is different and it would be helpful for you to talk to people who are doing various things in photography to see what might be a good fit for you.

Let me know if and how this might have helped. I would like to follow your progress. Keep me posted.
