I have a friend who is a makeup artist. She has her own thriving business and is featured in magazines. She started at the makeup counter in Ulta and worked her way up.

Ulta, MAC, Macys - these could be potential places to start

I agree with Marie. I work in the cosmetic industry. You can start at a counter in retail or at and salon, and of course, you can work freelance, but I highly recommend getting training at reputable academy or beauty school, to learn techniques and get credentials. Finally, I recommend you photograph your work, build a portfolio of your work etc.
