I'm sixteen and a junior. I thought i wanted to be a doctor but turns out i don't and i need a plan. What do i do? #money #dance #singer #singing #dancing

Tracy’s Answer

The most important thing for you to do is connect to what you truly have a passion for. Your only 16!! Take the pressure off of yourself for a minute.

Regardless of what you choose to do in life, there are always ways to make a living at it.

If you truly want to be a singer, then you will want to take classical voice lessons. If there is a choir in your school, join it. You will start to learn how to read music by paying attention when you're in rehearsal. When you're choosing a Voice Teacher, you will want someone whose voice you like and who makes a nice, clear, pure strong sound when they sing. Also, you have to like them and they have to be nice.
Proper singing technique is everything for a long career. Follow singers you like and try to understand why you like their voice. Don't ever try to imitate another singer. Develop your own instrument truthfully.
When you are looking at colleges, there are many that have Vocal Performance majors. Mostly these are opera focused, but the information, education, training and networking you will be provided with will give you a great foundation for a career.
As a singer, you have a lot of options for making it a viable source of income: performing, teaching, touring are just some of the things you can focus on.
Who told you you can't dance? Take an absolute beginner or an introductory dance class in an idiom you like. If you are interested in musical theatre, you will need to take ballet, no matter how much you think you aren't Misty Copeleand.
As you go along, keep your options open, because *news flash* even people who have established careers and are 'all grown up' often they don't know what they want to be, still! That's just being human.
Talk to a lot of people and ask them why they chose their jobs.
Read biographies of people you think you might want to have similar careers to. Keep your options open, and don't listen to anyone who says 'you can't'. They don't Know. Only you can live your life.

Hi Rachel!

It is not uncommon to be unclear about a future career.

As far as your interest in singing, you can do a search for "Choral Groups Colorado Springs" and "Singing Groups Colorado Springs". In those lists you will find some very interesting appearing groups. It would be interesting for you to contact the groups that look most interesting and see about participating. Some are volunteer and some appear to be ones in which one would get paid for singing. Not only would you get an opportunity to sing, but you would get the opportunity to meet many different people in many different career areas, so that you might be able to get some career clarity. Who knows, you might even be able to get a part time job.

Let me know if and how this might be helpful. Keep me informed. I would like to follow your progress.
