Shane’s Answer

I used to be a Network Manager where I was responsible for managing people, budgets and the actual network, phone systems, cybersecurity, etc. The first thing I'd encourage you to do is think about what you really want to do... is it MANAGE where you're responsible for things getting done, setting strategy, adhering to budgets, reporting to upper management, etc. or do you want to to DO? There are definite pros and cons to each one. Someone who is highly skilled in virtually any IT discipline can have incomes comparatively the same to their boss, so don't chase the paycheck. Chase the work. An IT Manager is going to have the same kind of requirements of a manager in any other field. Experience, knowledge, communication, budget understanding and leadership potential. If you'd like to be a manager (IT or any other field), you'll want to work on communication skills, conflict resolution, prioritizing and budgeting. Hope this helps!

Rebecca’s Answer

I would view your question on 2 parts : 1. Work in Information System 2. Be a manager. Before you can be a manager, you have to work in the industry to acquire your experience and skills before you are promoted to manager.
To achieve the first one, you can choose the relevant subjects in the college. You can check on the entry requirement of the colleges. After your graduation, you can look for jobs in the Information Systems, e.g. being Information Systems developer or analyst, etc.
To be a manager, you also require to have management knowledge and skills. While you working in the industry, I suggest you take the Master of Business Administration course on part time basis. On one hand, you can continue to acquire your experience on working in Information Systems . On the other hand, you can learn the management knowledge at the same time . Though it may be tough, it can help you to achieve your goal quicker.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Hi Taylor,

"What does it take to be a Computer Information System Manager"

First it takes to be a computer information system engineer. I know very few companies in this domain that hire young graduate and make them manager right away.
So step one: get a bachelor degree or higher in a computer science school that offers information system courses.
While at school, make sure you get internships in that field.
Once you graduate, you will be hired and work in the domain for few years and then you will be able to get into management role. During those years, you will discuss with your manager about the career path to get into management, the company's requirements to get there.

Management requires at least:
- communication skill
- planning skills
- social skills
Then it depends on your company.

There are companies that hire young graduate directly to management but to my knowledge:
- you need a Master degree
- you need to have attended management courses and show some experience in managing people during your school as an intern or as an extra scholar activity.

Taylor,
I hope I understand your question. If you have the interest to pursue a degree in computer science from an accredited university it will solidify your path to a long career in information systems, information security , cyber security, technology, technology risk management , or computer systems management. You can even get into programming, product development and software development. Computer engineers run huge complex systems, in all kinds of industries, like banking, healthcare, technology ( Google, Microsoft, Apple). Your initial role will be a junior entry- level role but if you have passion and drive, you will quickly rise in the organization gaining managerial responsibility.
