Imagination. you have to be able to visualize items and be able to put them together. Similar to building a Lego project just using your imagination. That is how LEGO got started was someone's imagination to help architectures present 3D models to their customers.

Takes imagination, passion for what you want to do, networking so you can get paid in this career field, and the drive to stick with it.

Start checking out some of the 3D programs online. There is a website called GitHub for students...GitHub Student Developer Pack...you get a chance to work with professional programs that cost thousands of dollars for free for 2 years, get advice from professionals, and meet other students online. You'll need your high school ID to prove you're a student.

My son loved it and gave him a chance to really work with different programs like Unreal Engine and Unity for video game development before he went off to college to really see if his interest did translate into development/programing before we paid a ton of money for programs he really couldn't get into or paid a ton of money when he went off to college to find out he didn't really want to be in that area of expertise. Turned out to be a great step before he went to college and when he did he was ahead of most of his college classmates!

Also, find out when they do 3D motion Cons/Conventions/Tradeshows..I think Pro Video Coalition has online events. My son is a video game developer and we go to Video Gaming Cons, and my husband digitally colors comic books and we go to a ton of Comic Cons....going to Cons/tradeshows will help you network with others in your field and get your name out there/learn from the professionals that includes asking questions to the professionals. Never underestimate the skill of networking!! Don't forget to take your parents....they might learn a bit more about your passion and really help out when you don't know where to turn to next. :)
