It can certainly be challenging. A great book to read is Eat a Peach by David Chang, which chronicles his life and the challenges he endured to ultimately have the success he has had. Its an inspiring story and great read. It seems there is more demand in wholesome, natural, organic food, however it is crowded.

I would suggest looking into culinary schools (e.g. Culinary Institute of America, Institute of Culinary Education). I'd also look into podcasts/articles from folks in the field right now, to get their perspective on how they advanced in the field -- David Chang is a great resource, like another commenter suggested.
