GWC: Where can I get an instructor for Girls Who Code Club at my school?

HI

I am in the process of setting up the GWC Club at my school.
Is there anyway we can have an Instructor (Online) who can guide us in coding at the club? That will be more helpful to be productive in the club.
Any advice will be helpful.

Desiree’s Answer

Hi Abhisri! My company has provided corporate support to Girls Who Code and they do fantastic work! I love that you are taking the initiative yourself to start a club! If you haven't already, I suggest you visit their website which has great tools for starting a club here: https://girlswhocode.com/get-involved/start-a-club. You'll see on that site that you need to apply to start a club.

Next I suggest that you work with the school (e.g., teacher, principal or coach) or the Parent-Teacher Association aka "PTA" (go to a meeting and put your idea on the agenda!) in your school to see if there are active community volunteers that might be able to help, or companies local to your school that work with the school and can provided volunteers/mentors.

I know it seems like a lot of boring process to have to work with the school and other adults that have nothing to do with GWC, but you need to be cautious about inviting adults into the school (even virtually). Many schools have requirements that adults working with children have criminal background checks, certain trainings, etc. Sometimes these requirements are driven by local laws. You don't want to run afoul of any of that or cause your instructor (when you do find him/her/they) to do so!

Desiree recommends the following next steps:

Visit the GWC website for tips on starting a club: https://girlswhocode.com/get-involved/start-a-club
Work with the school (e.g., teacher, principal or coach) or the Parent-Teacher Association ("PTA") to indentify potential instructors.
Make sure any adult you bring into the school environment (even virtually) meets your schools requirements for volunteers.
Thank you comment icon HI Desiree. I appreciate it. We are mostly done with the onboarding of GWC Club. We did last year too. But we are missing a good Coach who can guide the girls so that they are productive and prepare for a better future ahead in STEM/Computer Science. Abhisri

Mickael’s Answer

Hi Abhisri,

I am sure your school can help you contact professionals to help you. Else, I believe you should contact the HR department of companies that may help you but that would be tedious work. Schools usually have some contacts already.
The thing is that:
(1) you need to make sure the school agrees with the person that will be in relation with the club members.
(2) that the person is covered by their company human resources.

I know Dell has partnerships with school, but I have no idea about the process.

Fantastic replies already!

Adding to the conversation, nowadays, many corporate / commercial entities have Social or Community service offerings, whereby they donate professional hours to institutions like schools, STEM clubs and your GWC clubs, among others.

I know for a fact my employer, PwC, has many such interactions with local bodies at a granular level. You can reach out to your local / nearby office contacts, and ask to speak to someone involved with Community outreach. PwC is committed to skills and knowledge dissemination among youth groups, and GWC clubs are a fine example. More details in links provided below.
