Hi Emily! I have been a credentialed veterinary technician since 2007. The biggest pros of being a vet tech are being able to help animals and people as well as the multiple career options. I can work in an animal hospital providing nursing care for animals, for a pet insurance company, as a teacher at a vet tech college, in a laboratory, in a research facility, specialize in dentistry, provide technical support for medical equipment and so much more! I love having so many options that all ultimately help animals. The cons are the lack of standardization for our profession across the country and for those that work in an animal hospital, various concerns that come with work hours, pay, respect, animal neglect cases, emotional pet owners, and a lack of utilization in some places. Jobs outside of a hospital setting have less of these concerns.
