Drew’s Answer

As an engineer with over 40-years of practice, I think this is the best job in technology. There are many others that are good choices. However, as a forensic engineer, I draw on a very wide range of technologies, including many beyond what would be consider engineering. I've used mechanical engineering to calculate why a railcar turned over; meteorology to calculate air dispersion; physiology to estimate the effect of pollutants on people; microbiology to improve wastewater treatment; and, human factors to answer why an accident occurred. Economics and finance are necessary to calculate how much technology costs to build and operate over time. Engineering is an art and science. Art is finding the right technology to solve problems.

Megan’s Answer

The "Best Career" for entering a technology industry is highly subjective. I'm assuming that because you used engineer, you are interested in engineering.

If you are looking to work with computers or servers, computer science, software engineering, and electrical engineers are what companies like Dell hire the most of. Choosing one of these, however, is not a guarantee that you will be hired by such a company. Choosing a different type of engineering, as I have as a mechanical engineer, is not a guarantee that you will not be hired by such a company.

In the end, I believe that it is important to follow your interests. If you enjoy coding, give software a try. If you enjoy electronics, give electrical engineering a try. You are more likely to be hired for something you are passionate about.

Paul’s Answer

Hi Kevin,

There are many aspects to technology. If you have a passion for working with your hands and building physical things, you could look into Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering (with a focus specifically in hardware or electromechanical systems). For example you could work for Tesla designing parts or systems for electric cars or home battery systems; or you could work for Bose and design speaker systems. The options are vast with a degree in mechanical or electrical engineering.

If you like the idea of developing applications, for example computer games or social networks, you could study Computer Science or Electrical/Software Engineering. With a degree in electrical engineering or computer science, you can become a programmer for apple, google, or amazon; there are also thousands of smaller companies with programmers. These jobs currently pay VERY well relative to many other industries and they are really flexible across many industries. There is also a lot of opportunity to join startups or develop your own applications.

Lastly, if you enjoy drawing and how products look, you could study industrial engineering or digital design. With a degree in digital design or industrial design you might design website user interfaces (what you see) or design the shape and feel of physical products, or create art designs for marketing technology.

The options to get into technology are endless; however a college degree is likely critical (maybe less so if you can learn to program from a bootcamp or can find a good entry level coding job).
