Gloria’s Answer

Hi Joshua,

Digital art is one of those jobs that will probably grow in more importance over time. I will say that in my career field, Learning and Development, the use of animation is increasing since in some ways, it can be customized in a way that is difficult in livemation.

Miranda’s Answer

Hi Joshua! As everyone's already said, Digital Art is such a broad field, but that's why I love it! I majored in Digital Arts & Design and I've worked professionally as a 3D modeler, video editor, motion graphics artist, graphic designer, web designer, and now I work as a UI designer. Which one is the "best" all depends on what you define as the best; I loved doing work as a video editor (and I still love doing side projects, whether for pay or for fun) but the best salary for me has been doing UI design (I also love researching the psychology of user interaction as it relates to design, but that's just me). Defining what's best for you is probably going to stem from 1) what you enjoy the most and 2) what enables you the most to continue doing the job you enjoy. And maybe you don't go for what makes the most money in the end because whatever you do should be sustainable for long-term success.

As a side note though, to keep from getting burnt out in a single field, I always keep up with my previous interested-turned-hobbies. There are so many ways to stay creative with , for example, photography and using that energy boost to keep learning in the field you ultimately go into.

Krista’s Answer

Hi Joshua!

There are so many outlets of Digital Art; I would definitely start exploring/researching some of these things to see where your interests lie. Digital Art includes roles like videographers, video animators, graphic designers, user experience (UX) designers, photographers/editors, and much more.

I would encourage you to ask yourself what you enjoy. There are classes or mini-courses you can take on sites like Udemy.com where you learn a bit about some of the roles or areas listed above to understand what you're interested in. Digital is becoming more and more crucial in our day-to-day and will continue to evolve throughout the years. Being interested in Digital Art will also take a lot of adaptability as we see technology change over time. For example, videographers/animators and graphic designers are often quickly adapting to graphic or video sizes and formats based on platforms that they're creating for. In Digital Art, you have to be willing to learn and jump on the roller coaster of an ever-evolving landscape!

I hope this helps and I wish you luck in finding an area of Digital Art that interests you most.

Krista recommends the following next steps:

1. Look at Udemy and search 'Digital Art'. A lot of what you see is drawing on an iPad or in a digital environment. If this is what you're interested in, this is graphic design/illustration. There's plenty of spaces for this; designers/illustrators for movies, comic books, children books, etc.
2. If the 'Digital Art' you're looking for is not digital drawing, search any of the roles I listed above. Look into defining Digital Art. If digital drawing, is what you're thinking - it might be useful to take a class/training.
3. Learn! Learn! Learn! Jot down what you like/dislike about the areas you've explored.
4. Find professionals in the area to ask more specific, career questions to.
5. Ask for help from an advisor and start to put together an education plan to get where you want to go :)
