Nathan,
Really depends on level you want to coach at as well as the state. Majority of schools require a degree. AAU requires some certifications and some state specific requirements, but take less time than a four or six year degree. While in school (college) it's possible to help the team and get your foot in the door under a staff and they can point you in specific needs for a role that the coaching staff would want you to fill.

Raymond’s Answer

All depends on what state you are seeking to coach in but most states are the same. You'll need a BA degree or you can go the route of getting your teachers certification if you didn't earn a degree in education. I actually have my BA in Sociology but now working on my teachers certification to teach Special Education on the high school level.
