Rebecca’s Answer

Thank you for your question. It is a good question indeed. It really depends on a lot of factors that some you can control and some you cannot. Some people may have a very career goal and they setup their plan & objectives. They can follow it strictly. Some people does not have any plan and just to find out what opportunities available & they are interested. Most of the people may have some short term like 1-2 years plan. But, the plan keeps changing due to their interest change, external factors change, etc. For me, I fall into the last category.
I suggest you could consider on what you are interested on first and find out your career goal. You can setup some short term plan 2-3 years plan and review it from time to time. A lot of changes may happen both yourself and externally which is out of your control.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

RAVI’s Answer

Interesting and philosophical question indeed, coming from a young student!
It really made me think for a bit before I could collect my thoughts and answer.

My job situation has transformed itself over the years due to financial situation, due to location, and family more than my own personal liking.

This is my 6th job in a career of 35 years and I am in this for the past 20 years! This is because of my personal liking.
Long time ago when I graduated with a masters in electronics engineering with Computer Architecture major, I could not get a job! There were very few companies that needed my skill set and most wanted me to join programming. After a little wait, because of financial situations, I took a job in programming. I stayed in it for nearly 15 years although with different employers. I changed the job due to better pay mostly.
But I never really like programming. But I could not go back to computer architecture as the technology had changed a lot and no one wanted to hire me into that field because now I was outdated.

I thought let me try something else and tried to move into business marketing and management of software products and services. I loved it and I am here since. I like the work, like the pay, like the location, and fits my life style and family. What more could I ask for!

Many a time it is not possible to get a job of your liking, particularly the first one!. Family situation, financial, pay, location, and probably many other factors drive to a job. You have to be lucky to meet all other conditions and also your liking. Many do get lucky. Hope you do too.

Sometimes not knowing feels like a disadvantage instead of an opportunity. Maybe consider looking for jobs that meet any financial, short term needs you have with opportunities for growth.
Personally, I took that approach upon graduating from college. Although I now have long term goals, career objectives and a general plan; my current company has provided me with skills, experience and an ability to take care of myself and my family while I was figuring out all the other things.

Brandon’s Answer

I'm not sure if I am understanding your question, but I think you are asking about how/why a person looks for a specific job? With that in mind, I will answer this question. If this is not your question, then please say exactly what your question is.

When people look for specific jobs, it is either to get a certain amount of income per hour or by salary OR they are trying to get the experience within a field. The first option is the main reason for a lot of people, to make as much money as possible so that they can pay bills and buy stuff that they actually want. The second option is a little more complicated. With specifically finding details of a job, they want to add to their resume by showcasing certain skills that they can get from the job. With a lot of jobs nowadays, they require a specific amount of experience within certain fields, many of which would take 1+ years of experience to be considered. So by having the experience they have the options to go to other jobs that might want your experience in the job. People with experience within the field, when they go over to another job that might have a need for that particular skillset will usually pay more in order to entice you to go to their company.

Hope this helps!
