Alot. Alot, alot, alllooootttt. It is near impossible to be a successful, working chef and only be working 40 hours a week. Most chef jobs require a ton of your personal time out of the restaurant whether its developing menus, going over orders, dealing with staffing issues etc. Also something nobody told me when I was young was the fact that the higher up the ladder toward chef you get, the less you actually cook in most places. So in addition to loving to cook, plan on being a babysitter, psychiatrist, banker, mother, friend, enemy, general contractor, administrative assistant, amateur plumber, the list goes on

Hey travis! Great question. It will vastly depend on where you work and the position you have. A chef can have many positions in the kitchen. The head chef will obviously work many hours and be responsible for the whole kitchen. It will also depend on the restaurant's hours. Some of them require insane hours and many hours of prep before opening. Here might be a good forum to see people's personal experience in this area:

You can do a quick google search as well to find more info. Good luck!
