Hi Angel,
Graphic designers are visual storytellers that work with visual components to communicate information and messages. Graphic designers use components and principles such as: layout, form, colour, typography, space, visual balance, size, texture. Other key principles come from Gestalt psychology and tackle how we perceive visual information. My advise is to get familiar with those, as they are fundamental for good design. Drawing and sketching capabilities are a great pro for designers, but not a must. You can be a successful graphic designer without being a good painter or artist! Make sure you understand the design principles and are really good with the toolset, the rest is achievable with time.
Common tools that are used by graphic designers are:
Adobe Illustrator - for vector graphics, logos, flayers, more stylized posters;
Adobe Photoshop - for raster images, posters, more complex graphics;
Adobe InDesign - for books, magazines and materials with a lot of content;
Adobe AfterEffects - for motion graphics and animations
CorewDraw is also a popular, although not so relevant tool nowadays.

Hi! I'm currently in college for graphic design. Most graphic designers use the Adobe Creative Suite which includes computer programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. These programs can be used to draw, edit photos, create graphics, layout text, etc. It's also important as a graphic designer to have a sketchbook. Before working on a project, you should use a sketchbook to roughly sketch out ideas for what you want your design to look like. This process is called creating thumbnails. Once you have an idea you really like then you can work on creating it on the computer. There are many different types of graphic designers, as graphic design is everywhere around us in the world. You could design things like logos, posters, t-shirts, magazines, packaging for products, signs, album covers, book covers, or brochures, to name some examples. The possibilities are endless!

I used to rely on the programs solely within Adobe Creative Suite on the daily basis but as my roles/positions have evolved the amount I rely on each program within Creative Suite has changed. I used to use InDesign very heavily but now I rarely open that program. Within the last year I've also started using Figma for website layout design purposes.
