Sheila’s Answer

Hi Jericho:

A chef is a culinary professional who oversees a kitchen. There are many different ways to become a chef, including separate educational and experience paths.

The steps to becoming a chef can vary depending on your current education, skills and desire to learn. The following steps are the most common way of becoming a chef:

■ STEPS TO BECOME A CHEF

1) Start at an entry-level restaurant job
2) Earn your high school diploma or GED
3) Graduate from culinary school
4) Get applicable work experience
5) Get your certification

■ SALARY

The average salary for a chef in the U.S. is $48,893 per year, though some salaries range from $16,000 to $100,000 per year. The salary for chefs depends on several factors, such as their experience and education levels. The size, type and location of the business where the chef works can also affect wages.

Best of luck to you on your journey!

Sachin’s Answer

Hello,

Thanks for the question. The path toward becoming a professional chef has many twists and turns. Each route is uniquely different for everyone, in spite of some important commonalities. One key direction along the way is earning a culinary arts degree . The resources, networking opportunities, and skills (both inside and outside of the kitchen) that are available in culinary school have no substitute.

- Have a Passion to Cook and Create
- Find a Job Working in a Kitchen
- Complete High School or Have a GED
- Enroll in Culinary School
- Continue Getting Practical Experience

and then as a commis or chef de partie, with your experience and networking opportunities, you can get your first chef job. From here, you can work your way up to sous chef and eventually to head chef.
