Hi Hope,

That is a great that you know what you want and you want a career that will help people. I am not sure how much you know about being a firefighter, so I would recommend you go and talk to some firefighters in your area. I have visited a few firehouses and they are always friendly and willing to tell you about the job. I love getting tours of the different firehouses as the new ones have all the latest and greatest technology.

There are often fitness standards that vary by city, county, state. You can begin working on those fitness standards as well. In my area, some firefighters have to be EMTs as well. Ask about that, since you may need to get some education around medicine. If that is the case, you can get a head start on that subject in high school by taking a biology class.

You should also consider a few things like where you want to be a firefighter and in what capacity. City firefighters and volunteer firefighters may have different rules and regulations for fitness and education, for education. Do you want to be a firefighter in those big wild fires? Smokejumpers are wildland firefighters who often need the additional skill of jumping out of planes.

There are a variety of ways to be a firefighter. Right now, you have plenty of time to explore and ask questions about what is required.

Hello again Hope! I'm glad to hear you're interested in becoming a firefighter. It can be a very fun and rewarding career! It can also be very difficult at times. The work is often very physically demanding; sometimes you have to work all-night long, and no matter what you're doing you have to stop everything you're doing and respond to the emergency call - even if you're in the middle of taking a shower! It can also be difficult emotionally; we often see people having the worst days of their lives, perhaps losing everything they own in a house fire or being severely injured in a car crash. You have to really love helping other people to make it as a firefighter!

If you want to become a firefighter, make sure you're staying healthy! Eat well and exercise. Also, stay in school and be sure to pay attention in your science and health classes. Be sure to be a good citizen; don't do drugs and don't get in trouble with the law. Most of all, stay positive and don't let anyone tell you that you can't do it!
