Cristian’s Answer

In other countries, you can become a lawyer even when you had problems in the past, but you already resolved it. You will need to pass the moral evaluation and that the penalty have not had included prohibition to practice the law profession.

David’s Answer

If you have any kind of criminal or problematic background, there are processes--varies by state--to get a decision from the state bar association BEFORE STARTING law school as to whether your background will be a problem in the moral character background check. You'll want to get such a determination BEFORE spending 3 years and $$$ for law school!

That said, the legal field is more than just lawyers! Here are a few:
paralegal
stenographer
bailiff
legal assistant
legal researcher
legal librarian

Camille’s Answer

What do you mean by "bad" background? The answer depends.

When you apply to be a lawyer you have to pass a background check called moral character/character and fitness. There are things in someone's past that might prevent them from passing this (and if you don't pass they won't let you be a lawyer). Other "Bad" background things might not prevent you, especially if you can show the bar exam people that you are doing better now.

For an example, here is a link about the CA Moral Character where they talk about things that might disqualify you (example: Violent felony).
