Yes, I would recommend finding a way to bridge the gap. Things like comparisons always work when it comes to theory. Keeping up with the current music always helps when dealing with students plus it will give them something relatable to what they listen to for further understanding.

Show them how the old musoc relates to the new. Also, so them the theory of the music they listen to.

Yes, music try to find music theory concept that you learned and see if they are used in contemporary music. Bands still use C major, G major to D major in their songs, so that would be a good place to start. It doesn't matter if the band in question you're listening to doesn't know music theory either.
