Yes, for a UK Student Visa, you need to take up the IELTS For UKVI (Visas and Immigration) Test.
There are different types of IELTS Tests, so be careful.
For more information regarding the score needed, visit their official website: https://www.gov.uk/student-visa/knowledge-of-english

Different Universities and Colleges have different IELTs requirements. For example, I believe Bath is 6.5 overall, 6 minimum, whereas Cambridge is 7 or 7.5 overall, 6.5 minimum (scores range 0~9 for each section, reading, speaking, listening, writing). Go to the UCAS website or the Uni's website to find out their requirements. My Asian and Russian friends have studied English for ~4, 4.5 years and they've done well, 6.5s and 7s across the board.

I've had family need to go through the UK visa process. If you're not exempt from the requirement by being from one of the list English-speaking countries, or coming through a university that can certify your level themselves, you'll need to do a test. The important thing for the UK visa process is that it's through a secure testing center (SELT) - in the past there were a lot of cheats sending someone else to do the test for you, so they've clamped down on it and now require certain approved centers to be used.
In terms of score, I don't think it's so important - just that your level is CEFR B2 or above for degree-level study.
