Will hospitals hire high school students to work over the summer?
I'm a high school sophomore and very interested in science but I'm not sure if I want to go into medicine or not. I thought working at a hospital over the summer might give me some good ideas. Do hospitals allow 16-year-olds to work with patients? #medicine #science #high-school-students #hospitals #summer-internship

Olivea,
You might be able to get some volunteer positions. One that comes to mind is a patient sitter. Just someone who sits with a patient, keeps them company, reads to them, converses with them, perhaps gets them water or does other small favors, without doing anything "medical" other than calling for help. It's good that you want to get a closer look at your potential future career - very wise idea!!!

After high school, becoming a scribe would be a way to work for pay and also learn more about the life of a health care professional.

Depends on your local hospitals. The ones around here usually hire volunteer workers. Sometimes different fields may let you "shadow" a healthcare professional but it's become a little more difficult due to HIPAA (protects patients privacy). I would start by calling your local hospital. Good luck!
