A good place to start, is become a volunteer. The last time I looked, the Justin Fire Dept. was accepting volunteers. That is how I started, in Trophy Club, Tx. One of the most important things a Fire Dept. looks for, in the area you live, is a certification from a local academy. Frisco had one at one time. TCC in Saginaw has offered one in the past. You can check with both places. The Chief of Justin is a good person to call and ask where to go to an academy. They have a website. If you want to be a Firefighter Paramedic, do not wait for some big department to send you to their academy and paramedic school. Go on your own. I went to Methodist Medical Center in Dallas for paramedic school. TCC In Hurst has one.

Alec’s Answer

Greetings, Cody. Being a career fireman is a wonderful thing, however be prepared to work very hard. This field is extremely competitive. So much so that I am taking a break from public safety and working as a medical representative with Amazon. I have my firefighter I/II, HazMat Operations, EMT, and a b.s. in health science and I still struggle to find a decent job as a firefighter. Ensure you are physically fit and live a good lifestyle, and that this is something you whole-heartedly want to do. Many individuals select this profession for the wrong reasons (i.e. attention). There are degrees in "fire science" that you could find in select colleges if you do some research. That would probably be your best bet if you only want to work in the fire service. You can also get a degree in paramedic sciences in college. I would do fire science or paramedic sciences if I were you. Also, you can get a degree in homeland security and emergency management which would benefit you. Or have something to fall on, such as an RN degree. There are many routes you can take, but it is up to you to narrow it.
