1. Is there an opportunity to move up in this job?

For example, I would like to move up in my position and improve in my work area, so I have this question #career #job #police #detective

Thank you comment icon There are many special and specific trainings available for law enforcement. College is a must and, after a certain level, grad school is also appropriate. I would recommend diversifying your training to increase your overall knowledge in several areas versus just forensics or just accident investigation. Hope this helps. Catherine Payne

Pretty much all careers have up word mobility, including law enforcement. A classmate of my from HS started out as a cop and now is a chief of his department.

The Police magazine website has some advice from people who have been there. Check it out at:

If you are interested knowing how things would be done in a particular city (like your own city), a good way to find that out is to call up the PD and ask to do an informational interview with the the chief, lieutenant, Sergent or someone in similar position.

You can look up the pathway for becoming a detective in your area through the law enforcement page pertaining to where you want to serve. It changes from state to states and even city to city with regards to how much time you need to serve as a police officer before taking the exam to become a detective or Private Investigator. You'll need to google around to find the right page for the police department you want. Some states require that you be a police officer first (if not most states require this). I recommend going on a ride a long with police officers in the city or area you'd like to apply to. You can ask them questions about advancements directly as well.
