You do not have to go to school to be a musician, but there is a lot of study and training involved. If you wanted to become a teacher in a school, you would then have to go to school. You can not teach in a private or public school without a B.A. Or Master's . Just to do a gig down the street doesn't require a Master's degree. I would suggest you study privately. Its a lot cheaper and you get one on one lessons with a teacher.
Its not easy to do this but when all is said and done, you don't have a monstrous student loan that unless you have a day job to make payments you will never pay it off. There's ear training programs/apps that you can buy that will develop your ear. Theory & Harmony Lessons are available all over. Finding a teacher who plays your instrument is easy to find also. And again you won't be stuck with a huge student loan. Nothing beats experience on the band stand which you'll get at some point.

Nir’s Answer

There are thousands of schools for music but a lot of them are very expensive and music is not a very high paying career. If you can afford music school it's a great time to focus on your craft and meet other musicians but it's not strictly necessary. I've met plenty of musicians that made it without any music classes by just doing a lot of playing. Going to jam sessions and practicing are two things that are totally free and also crucial to the development of you music skills
