Doc’s Answer

Adrian make sure your resume matches the job posting. The closer a match your resume is to the job qualifications, the better your chance of getting selected for an interview. Make a list of the qualifications the employer wants, and then be sure to include as many as possible in your resume. You can find the specific skills and attributes the employer is looking for in the job posting. Don’t send the same generic resume in for every job. Take the time to customize it by including the qualifications and skills the company is looking for so the employer knows you have the right stuff. As well as writing your resume to match the job, take a few minutes to update your job descriptions so they make the best impression. The qualifications for being considered for a job are usually listed at the bottom of the job ad. Make sure you have at least the minimum required qualifications to be considered. Otherwise, you’re wasting everyone’s time, including your own.

A complete resume should include the following sections Adrian.

Doc recommends the following next steps:

CONTACT INFORMATION – Contact information should be placed on top of your resume. It should be easy and quick to read: Name and address; E-mail address; Phone number and your website or online portfolio.
OBJECTIVE STATEMENT – An objective statement clearly states the purpose of your resume. Not every resume has this. Use it to let an employer know your specific job or career goal. Tailor your objective to the type of job to which you're applying.
SUMMARY STATEMENT – A summary statement grabs the employer's attention by highlighting your qualifications. It is used in place of an objective statement. An employer may not read your entire resume. A summary will give them a snapshot of your work experiences, achievements, and skills. To be effective, it should be very brief (4-5 lines of text). It should also be written for the position you are applying for. Use keywords and resume verbs when creating your summary statement.
EMPLOYMENT HISTORY – You can present your work experience in a variety of ways. The most straightforward way is the chronological format. List your current or most recent job, and work backwards in time. Include your job title, your employer's name, the city and state in which it is located. Also list the start and end dates (month and year) of your employment. For each position, add a summary of your responsibilities and accomplishments.
EDUCATION – List your educational accomplishments, starting with your most recent or highest degree. Include the name and location of the institution attended, your degree, and field of study/major.

As others have stated, there are a lot of options to build your resume.
I used Paango.com to build my resume. I would suggest looking into few of them and figuring what suits you or what you like the most.

Thanks,
Anup

Hello! There are a lot of resources (free and paid) online so check those out. Also, ask people in your life who have years of experience in the workforce for tips and advice. I created my resume based on the advice I got from others and how others organized and wrote their resumes. It's easy to overthink the resume building process, so have people proof read your versions. Also, if you are in high school, ask your advisors for help!

Adrian,

I worked in job placement for ten years, and looked at LOTS of templates, all of which had weaknesses. Until, one day, I found gotresumebuilder.com

It gives suggestions along the way, including examples from other peoples' resumes. It lets you pick the layout, rename and rearrange your section headings, etc. And, with a library card or student ID, it is totally free.

While it's nice to have a resume, and to start working on learning how to do one, the good news is, if you are looking for restaurant, fast-food, or retail work (the typical school jobs), you really don't need one. Just about all of them will have you do an on-line application. It will have an option to upload a resume, but, it's usually not required.

If you do choose to write a resume, keep in mind you are trying to demonstrate that you will be a good worker. That is, that you will either make money for your employer, save money, or both. This is done through things like exceptional customer service, being dependable (showing up for work) and complying with safety measures (injured employees or customers cost an employer a lot!) You can use a section on Extracurricular Activities on your resume for this. Also highlight teamwork. Draw on activities in school. Don't just say "football team." Add a little to it, like "showed up on-time for practice twice a day throughout my summer vacation. Always wore required equipment, never penalized for an unlawful hit" etc. . . ..

Good luck to you!
