Raquel’s Answer

There are a lot of different charting systems out there and each hospital uses its own. I've worked with travel nurses who have used a different system at each place they've been. The program that I have seen most commonly is EPIC. Each system has the same basic tenants but have different ways of documenting and accessing information. You'll get exposed to whatever hospitals use in your area in school and will get trained on it when you are hired as well.

Hello Katherine,

Technological Tools You Should Be Familiar With

In today’s digital age, there are several technological tools that students should be familiar with to enhance their learning experience and prepare for the future workforce. Some of the essential technological tools include:

Microsoft Office Suite: Familiarity with programs like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is crucial for academic tasks such as writing papers, creating spreadsheets, and designing presentations.

Google Suite: Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides are widely used for collaboration, cloud storage, and easy access to documents from any device.

Learning Management Systems (LMS): Platforms like Canvas, Blackboard, or Moodle are commonly used by educational institutions for online courses, assignments, grades, and communication with instructors.

Video Conferencing Tools: Tools like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet have become essential for virtual classes, group projects, and meetings.

Research Databases: Familiarity with databases like JSTOR, PubMed, or Google Scholar can help students access scholarly articles and research materials.

Cloud Storage Services: Services like Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive are essential for storing and sharing files securely across devices.

Coding Platforms: Basic knowledge of coding platforms like Scratch or Python can be beneficial for students interested in computer science or programming.

Graphic Design Tools: Understanding tools like Canva or Adobe Creative Cloud can be useful for creating visual presentations and projects.

Time Management Apps: Apps like Trello, Todoist, or Google Calendar can help students organize their tasks and schedules effectively.

Cybersecurity Awareness Tools: Knowledge of cybersecurity tools and practices is crucial to protect personal information and data online.

By familiarizing yourself with these technological tools, you can enhance your productivity, collaboration skills, and digital literacy in various academic and professional settings.

Computer Software Used by Nurses for Charting

Nurses rely on specialized computer software to efficiently manage patient charts, document care provided, and ensure accurate record-keeping. While the specific software used may vary depending on the healthcare facility or organization, some common examples include:

Electronic Health Record (EHR) Systems: EHR systems like Epic, Cerner, or Allscripts are widely used in healthcare settings to store patient information electronically, track medical history, medications, lab results, and streamline communication among healthcare providers.

Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS): CDSS software assists nurses in making clinical decisions by providing evidence-based guidelines, alerts for potential drug interactions or allergies, and personalized recommendations based on patient data.

Medication Administration Software: Programs like Omnicell or BD Pyxis help nurses manage medication administration processes accurately by tracking doses given, documenting administration times, and ensuring patient safety through barcode scanning technology.

Nursing Documentation Software: Tools specifically designed for nursing documentation such as PointClickCare or SigmaCare enable nurses to chart assessments, interventions, care plans, and progress notes efficiently while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

Telehealth Platforms: With the rise of telemedicine, nurses may use platforms like Doxy.me or Zoom for Healthcare to conduct virtual consultations with patients, document encounters securely, and collaborate with other healthcare team members remotely.

By leveraging these computer software tools tailored to the healthcare industry’s needs, nurses can enhance patient care delivery, streamline workflows, improve communication among interdisciplinary teams, and maintain accurate health records in compliance with regulatory requirements.

Top 3 Authoritative Sources Used in Answering this Question:

American Nurses Association (ANA): The ANA is a professional organization representing registered nurses in the United States. Their publications and resources provide valuable insights into nursing practices and technology utilization in healthcare settings.

HealthIT.gov: As a government website managed by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), HealthIT.gov offers authoritative information on health IT adoption in clinical settings and provides guidance on selecting and implementing electronic health record systems.

Journal of Nursing Education: This peer-reviewed journal publishes research articles on innovative teaching strategies in nursing education and emerging trends in nursing informatics and technology integration in nursing practice.

GOD BLESS!
James.
