How did you about becoming a biomedical researcher?

I'm a sophomore in high school who is interested in pursuing the field of biomedical research in the future, and I don't know all of the steps required to become a researcher. I'm planning to take AP Chemistry and Biology, as well as AP Stats and BC Calculus in the 11th and 12th grades. What are the courses I must take in college? What are the possibilities for my BA degree? Should I also pursue a Master's Degree of PhD? #college #science #college-major #biology #research #medical-research #biomedical-science

It's a great idea to make sure you take lots of science courses in high school. Most research positions out there will want, like Jessica said, an undergraduate degree in STEM (but biomedical researchers come from lots of different backgrounds, like biology, chemistry, physics, engineering. You don't need to do something super specific!)

As you start looking at colleges, one thing to keep an eye out for is whether there will be opportunities to conduct research as an undergraduate. Many biomedical labs will have openings for undergraduates, and it's a great opportunity to jump in and see what biomedical research is like firsthand. You absolutely don't need to decide on graduate school right now; just take it one step at a time! Whether you do a Master's, PhD, or jump straight into industry, everyone will be looking for pretty much that same undergraduate experience.

Jessica’s Answer

You could become a biomedical researcher with a bachelor in a STEM discipline. However, if you want to advance your career to the point where you manage a project or a lab then you definitely need to pursue a PhD and in some cases a post doctoral training.
