What is the hardest part about being a theatre teacher.

I want to be a theatre teacher/director in the future. I'm not sure what grade I would want to teach yet, but I know that I want theatre to be a part of my life. #teacher #acting

Hi Ireland.

I’m a special education teacher. While there are many differences between specializations and grade levels, the hardest part of being any kind of teacher is that there are often political and financial forces that are outside your control and have a huge impact your work. Education is inherently political, which is why this is true across public and private entities as well as content areas and grade levels.

Depending on where you work, there is generally a stigma around school cutting funding for the theatre and arts department. That can make it very difficult for a theatre teacher because with little funding, you don't have the resources and supplies necessary to put on successful shows. Without successful shows, your program faces more funding cuts and lack of fundraising because there isn't as much support from students and parents.

Great question! Growing up, fine arts was a big part of my life-- singing in choir, playing in band, and acting in theater. My first career outside of college was an elementary school teacher and I had an opportunity to help out with after school clubs such as practice for the Jr musical and help run the school talent show. Fine arts is important in children's education, however unfortunately it is one of the first programs often to be cut or reduced due to budgetary restraints by school districts.

This is definitely a great question because this is a rare question for upcoming educators. First of all, I want to thank you for picking this as your future career. I would say teaching any subject has its ups and downs. The down side to teaching is not reaching a student. The educator inside of you wants every student to learn the concept. So, we as teachers research multiple ways to teach the skill just to reach that one or more students. Then, as an educator, it’s hard to address all levels of learning style in one classroom but you will find a way. Even though there are challenges in education, you will truly enjoy the profession.
