I would say that an art major doesn't require more techniques as much as it provides more techniques. Building on your techniques is a part of the experience and value of going to an art school, and you will discover other techniques and mediums that you may not have realized you had any interest in. In my case, for example, I was a graphic design major that ended up loving my fine-art classes in resources, photography, and art history. Not only did I love these classes, but they also provided me with techniques and other ways of thinking about things that I could apply to my school work and eventually my career.
As far as being worth taking, I would say it is up to the individual, their personal goals, career goals, and even their financial situation. For me, even though I have my share of school loans, it was 100% worth it for what I experienced and learned.
Hope that helped.

As an art major, you will be exposed to several mediums and learn more techniques.
I started as an art major and switched to art history. After I graduated college I started in the telecommunications industry until I found the job I wanted. Within the company, I found opportunities to be a ux designer. Art can take many paths and provide different opportunities.

Hi Colin, In this day an age art is all encompassing. I majored in Digital Art and took several art courses up until I graduated and continued to refine my craft and learn to work with numerous other mediums besides paint. To this day I am amazed by the compositions that I see in art museums/galleries. I would be prepared to stretch your imagination in what you consider art but at the same time so long as you have a meaningful story behind your work and are confident and willing to trust the process you will do just fine.
