I'm currently applying for a online STEM program with MIT, but the acceptance rate is low, which I'm worried about. Do you have any tips on how I can showcase who I truly am through my essays?

Hi Jessie.

MIT requires students to complete 5 additional essays, all of which understandably appear intimidating to approach.

MIT Application Essay Prompts:
Prompt 1: Tell them about something you do simply for the pleasure of it. (200-250 words).

Prompt 2: Pick what field of study at MIT appeals to you the most right now, and tell them more about why this field of study appeals to you. (100 words or fewer).

Prompt 3: Describe one way in which you have contributed to your community, whether in your family, the classroom, your neighborhood, etc. (200-250 words).

Prompt 4: Describe the world you come from; for example, your family, clubs, school, community, city, or town. How has that world shaped your dreams and aspirations? (250 words or fewer).

Prompt 5: Tell them about the most significant challenge you’ve faced or something important that didn’t go according to plan. How did you manage the situation? (200-250 words).

Good luck!

Alexandra’s Answer

I applied to 5 prestigious universities in high school and I was accepted to each with scholarships. I believe I can offer some tips for a great college entrance essay.

1) Don't worry about perfection. Instead, use any essay prompt to showcase your thinking and personality.
Do I mean don't use spell check or proofread your essay? No. Definitely do that! But understand what universities are really seeking is an understanding of who you are and what you, and only you, can bring to their learning community. Lots of applicants will have great grades and test scores, but how are you different? Did you have an experience learning abroad? Is your cultural background underrepresented at the school? Did you build a functioning robot? Awesome. Show them with your essay why you are different.

2) Get feedback
Absolutely have a trusted teacher, adult, friend take a look for mistakes in your essay and make sure they understand your writing well. Be open to suggestions, while making sure this essay is still very much your work.

3)Read other great essays
Know your competition and read other entrance essays. Do some research. Good writing has certain elements that you will become familiar with the more you read essays.

4) Lastly, believe in yourself.
Simple. You can do this! Once you've given your best, that's all you can do.

Good luck!!
