If you didn't know there are many types of welding, gaining a certification in something like underwater welding might be a way to be higher paid. Sites like Glassdoor are basically an anonymous form of social media for professionals to discuss salaries and the workplace environment. Talking to someone who works as a welder or doing a job shadow would also be a good way to get more information.
