I think the answer to this question is basic. It is important to have a solid understanding for the relationship of Energy, Work and Heat. Beyond this will take you in any direction you desire.

Any field in engineering requires problem solving skills. I think that is one of the most foundational skills one must know to pursue and succeed in engineering. Problem solving skills touch base on so many different aspects of Engineering. Design process, trials, testing, and for mechanical engineering, it's a huge part of the design process.
The main steps in problem solving are: What is the problem? What are some solutions to it? Pick which one you believe is the best. Then finally, Implement it and follow up, is it the best one? What worked and what didn't?
This critical thinking skill will help you a lot when it comes to any design process you come across in both school and careers.

Mechanical engineering is a broad field and many specific roles will benefit from different skills. However I have found that in addition to problem solving skills, attention to detail and a focus on the small things is a key skills for success. Mechanical engineers frequently will create and review complex drawings and being able to find the small error early, even if it seems insignificant, can save lots of time and money in the long run. Being able to think through a design methodically and consider all the tolerances, mating components and environmental factors, is critical.

I studied mechanical engineering in college. Definitely develop a problem solving mindset. Identify what it is you need to solve and then come up with potential solutions. Learn to filter out the extraneous information and pick out the crucial data that help identify the problem and potential solutions.

A successful mechanical engineer needs to be very hands on and love tinkering with mechanical things.
A good example is working on cars and repairing and restoring them.
If this is your interest, then there is a direct connection with your hobby and your career as a mechanical engineer.
Today you use a lot of 3D software tools to design things. But the have to be built and tested and you should have in interest in this part of mechanical design as well.
3D printers are relatively cheap and there are many free programs available to use with and build with your 3D printer.

I studied manufacturing engineering in University. I may have applied some of the knowledge I have learnt from the University in work. However, I think problem solving is the most important skillset in solving complex engineering issue.
