Hello there!

What classes you take depends on what college you go to. Some places, like The University of Texas at Dallas, have a school dedicated to game design.

Other schools wI'll not have a direct route and will try to give you classes that may help and probably put you in a computer engineering or programming classes.

That being said, here are some tips:

1.) Figure out what part of game design you want to be in. There are more than just designer, artist, and programmer. And even those have sub categories. This helps you focus yourself and use your time wisely.

2.) Get advice about classes from your Advisor and professors during and after you find your focus.

3.) Take some writing classes. Being able to convey your ideas clearly in words is very useful. And being able to take criticism and learn from it is imperative.

4.) Learning some programming, at least the basics of C# and C++, is useful so you know the extents of your designs and how to talk to programmers.

5.) Take a project managmentioned class. Learning how to keep and work on a schedule is an incredibly good skill to aquire. Games need to be managed to be produced effectively.

Hope these tips help!

Ed’s Answer

What kind of games do you want to make? Learn about those fields. Study mythology -- it helped George Lucas write Star Wars. Play lots of games, figure out what you like and don't like about each. Then get a game engine, like Unity (free until you start making enough money) and learn how to use it.

Hope that helps...
