The New York Foundation for the Art (nyfa.org) is a great resource for art-related jobs although more geared towards art history/art business experience than studio art.

If you really are looking for being an artist, and being on trends, enter the world of nfts. You will do what you want to draw(digital drawings) you could use an iPad, or any tablet and a pencil or even draw on paper then scan it and JPEG and sell them for the price you want. As long as it is original and you could use, open ocean, rarity or niftygateway.

Ellen’s Answer

Hi Kat
This is a BIG question; there are many many jobs and careers in the art field. I have even answered a similar question, but I'll do it again, because lots of people assume there are no good paying careers in the arts, and that is NOT the case. So here are some basic categories to get you started.

Fine Arts: Artist (painter, sculpture, printmaker, photographer etc.) These are people who create artworks and sell them through galleries or the internet. Not a very stable career for most; it depends on the quality of your artwork AND the ability of it to attract buyers. Many fine artists have "day jobs" that pay the bills, or they combine their love of fine art with other art careers.

Graphic Design: Graphic designers work in many different areas, and their artwork is all around you.....websites, books, newspapers, magainxes, sports team logos, movie posters, advertisements in magazines or newspapers or on the web; even the lettering and design of your toothpaste tube or your cereal box. Anywhere words are used, a graphic designer was responsible. It's a huge field, and it can be a very stable career choice.

Product Design: Like Graphic Designers, Product Designers work in many different areas, but they design the things, the 3-D objects in our lives. Your computer, your smartphone, the chair you are sitting on, bottles of shampoo or milk cartons, cars, all were designed by product artists/designers.

Architects: Professionals who design buildings and public spaces. A degree in architecture and passing a professional exam is required.

Interior Designers: These are the professionals who put together rooms and interiors for businesses and homes; they choose the furniture, the color scheme, the textiles (curtains and rugs and carpeting) and so on. A subset are the set designers who work on TV and movie sets.

Fashion Designers: These are the professionals who design our clothing. Everything you are (probably) wearing right now was designed by a designer working in the fashion industry.

Education: Art teachers at all levels, elementary school, middle school, high school, college and adult education. I am a retired art teacher, I taught Middle School, and I loved it. You will need a degree in Art Education (or similar) and a teaching certificate to teach in public schools.

These are just some of the career in the visual arts. Most, if not all, require some sort of a degree or training in art beyond the high school level. All of them could potentially be a stable career, but since so many people want to work in the these fields, there is competition for jobs. So hard work, patience, and willingness to improve your art skills are necessary. Look these over and do some research on the internet and talk to your current art teacher for more information.

Best wishes!
