Lauren’s Answer

Hi Lily, I would recommend spending some time thinking about different hobbies you have. Is there any way you could make a job out of one of those hobbies? For example, if you love reading, consider working for a publishing company. Since you said you love to help people, I would also recommend trying out some volunteer opportunities. You could even go with friends/family so you're more comfortable since going alone can be hard. This way you can get a better idea of what kinds of opportunities there are out there for helping people. Maybe you love animals, you could spend some time working at an animal shelter. Or if you love working with kids, you could become a tutor at schools, work at a daycare, etc. There will be lots of job opportunities based on helping people you just have to spend some time figuring out what you're most passionate about and then do some research on types of career opportunities in that field!

Pawel’s Answer

Hi Lily,
First steps are usually the hardest. You should try with something you feel you are good in or you just like the most. If you are still not sure take some additional courses, keep practicing and try to convince yourself that this is for you. Maybe some internship would be good to start with? At the beginning of your career you will meet many new people with similar interests and I believe everyday you will be closer to understand if this job/role is for you. If after some period of time you still will not feel comfortable don't hesitate to look for something else and change your environment.

Harvey’s Answer

Hi Lily,
First of all, do not worry. You are not the only one in the boat of not knowing what you'd like to for the rest of your life. Thinking that far into the future can be extremely daunting. There are a few things that I could suggest for you to embark on your journey to figure out what you would love to do for the rest of your life.

The main thing you should do is trying a lot of new things. Do not be afraid to put yourself out there. You cannot know what you would like to do without trying it first. Along the way you will meet plenty of new people who can also help you answer this question for yourself. Life is all about experience and your goal should be to get as much of it until you have truly found what you love to do.

Dakota’s Answer

You can decide what you want to do by seeing what you are good at. The things you know you can do the best are what you should really go for. It's really good to practice what you aren't good at. Practice makes perfect.

Ernest’s Answer

It can be difficult or intimidating to know what you want in life. Sometimes you might think you have found your passion only to find out later that it wasn't. My best plan is to have a clear mind and understand who you are as a person by viewing your hardships throughout life and moving forward in branching into different activities that will change your perspective and possibly find your passion. Remember, it's okay to make mistakes, and don't let it isolate you from seeing who you are.

Gabriela’s Answer

Hi Lily,
Definitely agree with the below answer in trying out different activities and paying attention to your hobbies etc. I would even suggest joining some groups online or attending events related to your hobbies/passions. When I was deciding what I wanted to do with my future I took a look at my hobbies and passions to decide what I enjoyed. Once you narrow down your hobbies and do some activities which align with your passions I would connect with people in the field to see what it's like on a day-to-day basis. Sometimes you have an idea in your head of what a career will be like and in reality it is much different.
Even if you were to choose a career and down the line realize it wasn't really for you, don't be afraid to change, be honest with yourself. It is never too late to make a change. Lastly, I would think through in what ways you want to help people? There are a number of different ways you can help people and in reality, a lot of jobs are centered around helping people achieve a goal or help provide a service.

Rachel’s Answer

Try taking courses or joining campus clubs that may include your interests. This will help you learn rather or not you are actually interested in something while building a community of like-minded people who can give you further advice on the subject. Take random courses outside of your major as well, in case you find something you never thought you would interesting.

Nicole’s Answer

Great question! Start first by thinking what motivates you? What excites you? What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Are there any topics you particularly loved in school? Or hobbies or past times that excite you? There are career paths in just about any path you could want to go, so I recommend picking something that you feel most excited about. Don't worry about money in your career choice. If you chase what you love and are passionate, money will follow.

Linda’s Answer

First , Understand what are your internal advantages. Most of the time, the reason why you don't know what kind of job you're looking for is that you don't find the direction you're good at. Through professional career assessment, you can understand your personality strengths and weaknesses, as well as the corresponding suitable jobs. second, Compare the advantages and limitations of the work of your relatives and friends , and think about what you like and what you don't want to accept . third, refer to other people's comments/suggest for you.

Harvey’s Answer

Hi Lily!
Figuring out what you want to do in life can be a daunting task. There are tons of different opportunities that you can take advantage of in order to find different paths that you can take. Schools usually offer plenty of useful information regarding this and you should definitely pay attention and use your resources.
One way that I have found what I like to do is through trying a lot of new things. There are tons of organizations across campuses that have tons of cool people who want to help you. Another point is to make sure you pay attention to your email because schools love to send out a lot of information about events and internships.
Hope this help!

Vivian’s Answer

Hey Lily! I think that your thoughts are valid especially as a lot of college students and people are similarly confused on what they want to do in the future. I know some people who decided to go into college undeclared as a major and it gave them the chance to explore various areas until they found what they liked! An advice that I would recommend is to try out something new every day because you never know what you will like or dislike. Decisions are not made in one day and it can be hard to decide what you want to do, but just take things one step at a time and remember that you don't have to stick to one thing or job for the rest of your life.
