Blake, I hope you are doing well. I went to an engineering school and also completed an internship in an industrial engineering group which helped me learn about different engineering paths of study and jobs. First off, being a sophomore is a great time to be thinking about going to college and future job prospects. If you do want to be an engineer you will need to be serious about math, able to read and create technical documents, and be able to translate your findings into a concise document. There are also a lot of different engineering fields that might align to your interests. A few examples of different engineering fields include; computer, civil, electrical, environmental, mechanical, and industrial. Because you stated you enjoyed being in the outdoors you might really enjoy civil or environmental engineering. Civil engineers work with the landscape and help to design and build roads, bridges and other structures. Environmental engineers are strongly involved in managing resources such as water, soil, pollution, and emissions. I see you are in Minnesota so a next step would be to look at the University of Minnesota college of engineering webpages. These should be able to tell you what type of courses you would take in college and what types of jobs you would qualify for when you graduate. I would also look and see if there are engineering camps or seminars you could attend in your area. This would be a great way to meet engineers and ask them questions about what they do each day as part of their job. Good luck! -Carson

CHRISTY’s Answer

Google is your best option to find different types of engineering. There are so many types. Research and try to find which types are booming in the workforce. I would not suggest petroleum engineering, as we are moving towards renewable energies.

Robin’s Answer

Hi Blake,

There are many disciplines within engineering. I would first start on a general field you are interested in. Then see if you can find people who work in that field. They may not necessarily be an engineer, but it wouldn't be hard for them to find someone they work with who is an engineer or knows an engineer. You can then setup some time to understand what they do.

Also in college there will be career fairs from different companies. You can also learn about the company and if it is an engineering school learn more about what their job is like.

Another option is visit the web site of any company you may have heard of before. Look at their career page and perform a job search on engineering. You can read the job descriptions to get an idea of what they do
