There are in general 2 paths to becoming a welder:
1:Getting a basic education in welding from a vo-tech or community college, passing welding tests as part of the curricula, and then applying for jobs.
2:Starting a job as a helper in a fabrication facility and making it clear you want to pursue being a welder. you'll work your way up from helper, to tacker, to a welder, being taught the skills necessary as you progress and being tested for certifications.
In general, going through option 1 you will have a job as soon as you are certified as there are businesses that source directly from these schools.
Option 2 will give you a much more general education and set of skills and you will be getting paid the whole time and may find that there is some other track you are interested in.
