Hi Soren,

I have worked in the performance apparel industry for almost seven years! If you want to truly focus on performance apparel and footwear innovation there are some great opportunities to explore. I know the University of Oregon offers a program strictly focused on product development which gives you the opportunity to learn about the process, start to finish, of developing product. It is a great starting point and to my knowledge offers opportunities to work with some of the leading performance apparel and footwear brands in the industry. Another avenue to explore is textile studies and programs as well. NC State comes to mind as a school with opportunities in the textile industry. Best of luck!

Daniel’s Answer

Hey Soren! If this is your dream, then some sort of sports science or technological degree would be a good start, but I would assume that there is not a minimum level of education required for this. Innovators usually just need the resources and the general knowledge to improve whatever they are working on, and that would probably hold true for this development as well. Hope this helps!

Jean’s Answer

Hi Soren, If you want to get into the shoe or apparel industry a degree in design or development of either of those would be preferred. I recommend you look at companies that you believe are innovative in those areas and reach out to them and they might have internship or mentorship programs. Good luck!
