It depends on your preference of what type of mechanic. There are positions all over the states. Do keep in mind that states further up north as well as the coasts, face corrosion and rust on their automotive repairs/maintenance. If you don't prefer that, stay and work in a state in the south. You won't encounter issues as often.

One of the great aspects of being a mechanic is the diversity yet uniformity at the same time. If you love boats and warm weather, work on boats in the south. If you like prototype work, go to Michigan. If you love trains, work on trains in a city with a yard. Or any decent size city in the u.s. has an auto repair shop or dealership. Where or whatever your passion is, they'll be a mechanic position there.
