Some jobs a welder is just that, a welder. MOST jobs, however, before you can weld you have to build something. Learn to read a tape measure. Learn to read it really well. Learn to use vernier calipers. Understand how to read the measurements it gives you. Learn to convert fractions from the tape measure to decimal numbers. (As in how to convert 1/4” to .250” and so on) Day in and day out you will measure a lot. You’ll also need to safely and effectively learn to grind metal with a grinder, cut it with a oxy/fuel torch or plasma cutter too. My advice is, when you get a job, pay attention to who the supervisors and other welders ask for advice. This is a person that is highly respected by the organization for their skill and knowledge. Buddy up to them. Learn their ways. Most welders will gladly share their knowledge with people that are willing to put in the work and learn.

Hi Luis A.
I am not a welder, but I worked in the Oil and Gas industry for many years and became familiar with some of the tools utilized by the welders in our pipelines.
Depending on what you'll be welding, you will need and/or be around different tools/equipment, so it's always important to get proper certification.
There are various sites out there that provide you with some info on the tools of trade, such as Weld Guru: https://weldguru.com/welding-tool-list/
as well as Water Welders: https://waterwelders.com/types-of-welding-processes/.
I hope this helps.
Best of luck!
