it is the process to join more than one material or more than one part of same material. The reason of joining might be different sometime to strengthen the product you are making some time because you need to join different material having different properties.
-Commonly people just not identified the material correctly and they are carried out by the appearance( for example stainless steel material is very commonly used material and there are various other material which look same as SS like KM-45 etc.) and used the wrong method of welding.
This is the one of the most common mistakes welders have trouble with.
But now a days we have new machines which help us to restrict there usage for certain materials up to some extent. But as we will be developing new material going forward this kind of mistakes need to be resolved on time.

Not exactly my industry, but one of the applications of nuclear technology is x-ray and gamma ray radiography of welds to non-destructively find defects. Things like cracks in the weld, porosity, and spatter are common problems they find. I know more about how the testing works than I do about what exactly weld problems are and how they occur, but I believe it's things like arc current and voltage, welding speed, and material - all have to be correct to get good welds. You can find lists of welding defects online, how they occur, and how to prevent them - try looking at sites like the one below.
