Is there a career and major that pertains to both journalism and science?
As a high school student, on my way to college, I find myself oddly interested in journalism and science. Thus, I am wondering are there any jobs/careers that will allow me to perform tasks in both these areas. Additionally, what majors are be best for these interests? #career #science #college-major #career-counseling #career-choice #career-path #journalism #choosing-a-major

Hi Esther!
It is great that you are looking to connect your two interests! Have you considered a research-driven career? Doing research in your chosen field of science may allow you to get exposure in both areas, as you will be able to conduct studies and then report on the results. As you look into colleges and universities, you may want to see if there are opportunities to work with professionals in laboratory settings, as you may get the chance to both help with experiments and then write about the findings. For example, at the university I attended, psychology students had the opportunity to apply to be "Research Assistants," where they assisted in testing hypotheses and wrote reports about the data collected. Maybe something along those lines might help you to bring your interests in both science and journalism together?
With regard to major, you might want to consider being a dual-major or perhaps doing a major/minor combination, depending on your interest level in each subject. You may also want to try to network with some professors in both fields, as well. Perhaps doing informal interviews with people in research or scientific reporting could also help you to solidify your plans for the future.
I hope this helps! Have a great day!
Sincerely,
Madeline

Hi Esther,
It is great that you have identified your interests. In today's world of technology, a great journalist who can do research, differentiate, assess and give feedback to consumers in multiple areas is quite useful. There are many science magazines, blogs and websites that look for people who can understand science and technology and also can write well. As you are a high school student, you can start with writing for school magazines and also blog your thoughts on the advancement of science and emerging technology in multiple fields. You can also connect with people who are in similar fields to understand what they studied ,what they do and how they shaped up their careers. Everyone's career trajectory could be different but the more you learn about career journeys of others, it would give you some idea. It is easy to double majors, a major and a minor in a university. A liberal arts college offers more opportunities to explore your interests in both science and journalism. Best of luck!
