What kind of certifications and programs do I need to become a marine welder?

I wanna become a marine welder, but what types of certifications and classes do I need to take to achieve my goal.

Thank you comment icon Being a welder is a great career choice. My uncle was a welder for a long time at a nuclear power station in South Carolina. He made a good living and really liked his job. There were only a few welders at his company that could do what he could do. So they really depended on him. If you aren't a welder, the first step would be to start working toward becoming a certified welder. Learn as much as you can about welding in general. Then after you get the basics down, learn as much as you can about the different types of welding. There are many programs and schools that can help you, including some programs offered by high schools. There are also welding schools you can attend after high school. In some cases, you might be able to get a job that will pay for you to go to welding school. This would be a good choice. I would encourage you to take it one step at a time and by the time you complete being a certified welder, you will meet instructors and other welders that can tell you the best way to be a marine welder. Good luck. Barry Loudermilk

The certification required will likely depend on the employer. I'd start by looking at what the requirements are for jobs posted @ https://www.indeed.com/q-Marine-Welder-jobs.html?vjk=a064a853630849c4 or similar sites.

This is a very specialized job and requires extensive diving and welding training/experience. https://waterwelders.com/smoothest-path-to-an-underwater-welding-career/ has a list of steps. A list of specialized schools are here https://waterwelders.com/best-underwater-welding-schools/ and it list where they are located. Most are in FL and CA, but there's one in Houston.

I'd take a few of scuba diving lessons to see what the underwater experience is like. You could even get a few diving certifications locally that may help you at an underwater welding school.

I'd also take some welding classes or formal training to ensure you like that part of the job. This way you could always fall back on this experience if you get tired of diving.

Great career choice! You would definitely need a high school diploma or GED and a diving certification. Take a look at programs that offer a diving certificate that is right for you. You would also need surface welding certifications or experience. Open water or scuba classes can also be beneficial. Hope that helps and good luck!
